Jamie Matthews, 1st Year Apprentice Joiner, achieved a place at the SkillBuild UK Final - Joinery category – scheduled to take place in November at Milton Keynes.

For the second year running, Mivan has a competitor in the SkillBuild UK Final, a great testament to the hard work and dedication of the Apprentice Programme. This achievement follows recent success with Charlie McAuley winning Mentor of the Year Award at Apprentice Awards and Conor Dallas winning the Overall Apprentice of the Year, recognised by CITBNI.

Jamie is studying NVQ Level 2 at the Northern Regional College (NRC) and just qualified from the dedicated Mivan Apprentice Workshop to the factory floor. This move is the next stage in Jamie’s development, enabling a new mentor to be assigned to assist progression through Level 2. Jamie will be given time to practice for the final in November to ensure he is as prepared as possible.

SkillBuild, delivered by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), is the largest multi-trade competition for construction trainees and apprentices. As the biggest and longest running construction skills competition, they are looking for skill and talent that is built to last.

A series of competitions sees the very best compete against each other to be crowned a winner in their chosen trade. As each level of competition progresses, competitors will be tested on their technical abilities, time management, character, and commitment. Helping to develop confidence, self-esteem, and life skills.

When finding out about qualification, Jamie said “I am delighted my score in the Regional Qualifier was good enough to secure a place at the National Final. I am really excited to participate in the Joinery category and will do my best to win. I must thank Mivan for giving me the opportunity to succeed but a special mention must go to my tutor, Gareth Spratt, as without him I may not even had been in the competition. I was on holiday at the time of the NRC qualifier and Gareth organised my participation at the Belfast Met competition - thanks Gareth.”

John Cunningham, CEO of Mivan, said, “Jamie has done a fantastic job getting to the final of SkillBuild UK, this will be the second year in a row Mivan has a competitor at the UK final. I know how much hard work Charlie McAuley puts into providing a successful foundation for each of our apprentices, this consistent achievement proves it is the best programme for joinery in Northern Ireland.”
