Kingsgate Extension on Schedule for August 2008 Opening

Kingsgate Extension on Schedule for August 2008 Opening

28 March 2008

Kingsgate shopping centre, Dunfermline’s premier retail destination, is undergoing a major £50 million extension which will almost double the existing floorspace to an overall size of 370,000 sq ft (34,360 sq m). Construction works on the development are well advanced, and the extension is on schedule for opening this August.

The development project will extend the shopping centre by some 162,000 sq ft (15,050 sq m) immediately to the east of the existing centre on the site previously occupied by the bus station and a multi-storey car park. A £5 million replacement bus station is underway at Queen Anne Street and due to open February 2008. In the meantime, the developer – Mivan – has worked closely with the Council to provide temporary bus shelters around town and a temporary car park on Leys Street, ensuring that disruption is kept to a minimum. Construction works commenced on site in October 2006 with the demolition of the bus station and multi-storey car park. The progress on site is well within the programme and the framework structure for the building is complete – marked by a topping out ceremony last October and the building made watertight at the end of last year Work on site is now focusing on getting the internal space ready for retailers fit out commencing with the 70,000 sq ft (6,503 sq m) Debenhams store which was handed over to the retailer on 15 February 2008. The extension is also supported by a new three-level car park with 711 parking spaces. The car park, which will be operated by APCOA, is on course for completion in April 2008. Martin Lynch, Project Manager for the development, said: “There has been fantastic progress on site and this has taken a great deal of hard work from all the development and construction team. We are well on the way to delivering a great retail centre when the building opens next summer.” Already Dunfermline’s main shopping destination, and only 14 miles north of Edinburgh, the existing Kingsgate centre is at the heart of this historic town’s main pedestrianised shopping street. Anchored by Marks & Spencer, the centre already boasts an exciting array of top high street retailers and counts Monsoon, Topshop, Evans, JD Sports, Dorothy Perkins and Burton among its 47 other tenants. The new development will add 27 new shops to the wealth of retailers already in town. High street retailer New Look will be joining Debenhams in 17,000 sq ft two-level unit. JJB, Clarks and Starbucks are also on board. The letting agents for the scheme - Eric Young & Co and Cushman & Wakefield – are currently in detailed discussions with a number of major retailers and expect to confirm some additional names shortly. Mivan is both the owner and the principal contractor for the scheme. The employers agent is Cyril Sweett. Woolgar Hunter are structural consultants and RSP the M & E services consultant. The quantity surveyor is CBA and the development advisors are WDM. Keppie Design is the project architect. « Go Back
