Specialist contractor Mivan has held its own recognition evening to thank staff for their dedication to making Mivan a success. The event took place on 7 September at the Comfort Inn, Antrim.

Over 80 people attended and representatives from Mivan were joined by senior personnel from Institute of Learning & Management, Invest Northern Ireland, Construction Employers Federation and the University of Ulster.
Alastair Hamilton, Chief Executive of Invest NI who delivered a keynote speech on the evening said, “Mivan has built an internationally renowned reputation for excellent customer service and the high quality of its workmanship. This is testament to the commitment of the company’s staff and would not have been possible without the management’s willingness to invest in training and development.
“Invest NI has developed a strong relationship with Mivan over a number of years and has delivered financial support, part funded by the European Regional Development Fund, that has enabled the business to bring forward a range of projects in R&D, operating efficiency and skills development. These activities continue to help Mivan win business in lucrative foreign markets and remain successful despite the downturn.”
The spotlight of the evening fell on Mivan’s Apprenticeship Joinery Programme and the Institute of Learning & Management’s (ILM) Graduate Training Programme which were both recently commended at the Construction News Quality Awards 2009 in London. Both schemes represent the culmination of Mivan’s three-year Learning & Development Strategy that was created in 2007. Mivan now conducts all of its apprenticeship training, in-house in partnership with Springvale Training Ltd. No other construction company’s programmes in Northern Ireland are structured in this fashion enabling Mivan to fast-track individuals through the programme where appropriate.
Daniel Starrett won the Apprentice of the Year category with the Most Improved Apprentice Award going to David Fleck, both just starting their 2nd year of apprenticeship.
Mivan Corporate Services Director Simon Harland commented “Mivan takes the training and retention of its best staff very seriously. Clients continually comment on the ability and expertise of Mivan’s staff as positive customer feedback. We recognise this as an important asset and want to provide our staff with the best programmes and support available. ”
There were also surprise awards for Mivan Chief Executive Dr Ivan McCabrey and Director Mervyn McCall who received Fellowships of the ILM from Chairman, Mr Ralph Bauer.
